UNHINGED
April 2018 | Jacobs School of Music | Dir. Kaleigh Howland
UNHINGED was my first show and premiered at Indiana University in a classroom. I wrote what I consider my first song in May of 2017, titled it “Blessed are the Hearts that Bend” and built this work around it. At the time, my understanding of writing came from music theory classes and bootlegs of audition songs sang at 54 below and the like on Youtube—it was a great introduction to musical storytelling, and I love this work for its distinct belonging to that specific genre.
We put it on in a classroom with the resources of our school and $6. In Pasek and Paul’s EDGES legacy, the show has four freshmen who explore their ability to handle newfound sadness away from home and discover what their discomfort offers.
I hope to return to UNHINGED and turn it into a song cycle for 4 female-identifying voices with a script and structure that invites young women to create site-specific theatre with their peers so the work itself can be an educating landscape used to play and perform.
